Please note that Paul Katcher of Time Magazine called this page "by far the weirdest site I came across while researching this guide" in his listing of Essential bookmarks for the true football fan. and that on Page 4 of the September 3, 2001 issue of Time Magazine this page is referred to as "informed analysis of the Patriots' salary-cap problems."

DraftDaddy.Com labeled this page as "perhaps the most complete single team salary cap page on the web".
SportsRetort.Com labels this page as "an amazing resource; ideally, every team would have such a page devoted to it."

According to my figures the Patriots are $1,330,168 UNDER their 2004 adjusted cap figure of $80,573,255 with 61 players (53 active, 8 IR) and a 7-man practice squad. I have the Patriots' 2004 cap figure as $79,243,087.

How to Read This Table
First and foremost, please read the player's documentation if you have any questions. When I don't know the date when a roster bonus is due I presume it to have been due on March 1, 2004. I presume that the Patriots will pick up the player's option bonus.
To figure out what would be the cap hit if the Patriots were to trade a player, add the remaining signing bonus amount to the amount of his roster bonus, if already earned, the amount of his reporting bonus, if already earned, and the amount of his offseason workout bonus money, if already, and to the amount of any money that is guaranteed past this season .
Please remember to use the Top 51 rule when figuring out the net cap hit for when a player is released.

Please note that as Jocelyn Robichaud pointed out in an email:
"The current cap status is calculated with the top 51 earners. On the other hand, not all of these players will make the team. Thus, as the team shrinks its roster to 53 players, it will create cap room unless it keeps all of its top earners. For example, let's say that Justin Kurpeikis ($380,000 in salary) does not make the team and is replaced by Tully Banta-Cain ($305,000 in salary. This would free $75,000 in cap room for the Patriots."

NFL Minimum Salary Levels for the 2004 season

7 to 9 Credited Seasons	- $660,000 *
10+ Credited Seasons	- $760,000 *

*All salaries for players with four or more years of experience AND who sign contracts that qualify for veteran's exemption will only count $455,000 against teams' salary caps.
