How to Read This Table
When I don't know the date when a roster bonus is due I presume it to have been due on March 12, 2013. I presume that the Patriots will pick up the player's 2013 option bonus so I include the option bonus proration in the total cap amount but until March 12 I do not include the option bonus in the Remaining Signing Bonus amount.
Please note that for some players not all of the listed numbers will add up to their reported cap number.

Lavelle Hawkins Lavelle Hawkins was signed by the Patriots on May 9, 2013. On May 10 ESPNBoston.Com's Field Yates reported "The Patriots officially signed wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins to a two-year contract on Thursday, and a league source has passed along the financial details of the agreement, laid out below.

Terms
2 years
Maximum value of $3.065 million
$150,000 in guaranteed money, all in the form of a signing bonus

2013
Base salary: $715,000 (split if placed on injured reserve: $383,000)
Workout bonus: $25,000
Incentives based on total receptions:
At least 40 catches -- $150,000
At least 50 catches -- $300,000
At least 60 catches -- $450,000
At least 70 catches -- $600,000

Note: Hawkins would not earn the sum of all the catch benchmarks he surpasses. For example, if he catches 55 passes, he would earn an additional $300,000, not $450,000 ($150,000 plus the $300,000).

2014
Base salary: $850,000 (no split)
Roster bonus (if on the roster on the 15th day of the league year): $75,000
Workout bonus: $50,000
Incentives based on total receptions:
At least 40 catches -- $150,000
At least 50 catches -- $300,000
At least 60 catches -- $450,000
At least 70 catches -- $600,000

Note: Hawkins would not earn the sum of all the catch benchmarks he surpasses. For example, if he catches 55 passes, he would earn an additional $300,000, not $450,000 ($150,000 plus the $300,000).

QUICK-HIT THOUGHTS: This deal is in some ways similar to the one-year contract that Julian Edelman signed this offseason, as it is predicated upon production. If Hawkins were to stay on the team for two seasons but not reach the 40-catch barrier in either year, he would earn a total of $1.865 million (assuming he takes part in offseason workouts). That's a reasonable price for what would be a complementary receiver role. The terms seem on par for a player that will have to earn a spot on the active roster, and if he were to reach the maximum incentives of this contract, it'd be a deal that would be well worth it for the Patriots. With 12 wideouts on the roster (as things currently stand), wide receiver will be perhaps the most closely watched position on the team throughout the offseason. This deal doesn't eat up much of the Patriots available cap space, and the team was already in good shape prior to the signing.

November 23, 2013 update Lavelle was released by the Patriots on July 31, 2013. He will cost $100,000 in dead money on the Patriots cap in 2013 and $75,000 in 2014.
