QUICK-HIT THOUGHTS: The Patriots surely hope that Ryan becomes a contributor on defense, but even if he ultimately becomes just a special teams contributor, this deal is kind to the cap. In a technical note, the 2013 base salary has a split, meaning if Ryan lands on a reserve list the base salary is reduced for 2013, while his 2014 base salary is tied to having a credited season in '13.One of the main thoughts on this deal is the financial benefit for a seventh-round draft choice vs. a rookie free agent. Beauharnais' signing bonus was greater than the guaranteed money given to the Patriots' top-earning rookie free agent T.J. Moe -- $47,592 to $30,000. So while there is something to be said for being undrafted and picking your destination, it usually still pays better financially to be a late seventh-rounder than a rookie free agent. Specific to the contract, there are split salaries in 2013 and 2014, so if Beauharnais lands on a reserve list in either season, his base salary would be reduced. In a technical note, the 2014 base salary is tied to Beauharnais having a credited season in 2013. " Please note that in Mike's original report that "signing bonuses" were "rounded out for cleaner math". I am using the exact figures.

April 12, 2015 update Logan Ryan has done enough to earn the Proven Performance Escalator in 2016. An eligible player will qualify for the Proven Performance Escalator in his fourth League Year if: (1) he participated in a minimum of 35% of his Club's offensive or defensive plays in any two of his previous three regular seasons; or (2) he participated in a "cumulative average" of at least 35% of his Club's offensive or defensive plays over his previous three regular seasons. Since Logan Ryan played in 52% of the defensive snaps in 2013, in 46.7% of the defensive snaps in 2014 and in 89.3% of the snaps in 2015 he will qualify for the Proven Performance Escalator in 2016.

A call for a donation

A long-time family friend, my youngest sister's best friend, is on the board of directors of a soup kitchen and food pantry in Malden, Massachusetts that provided in 2015 the equivalent of 1,030,000 meals to hungry, homeless and isolated people. I am asking that if you have found my salary cap pages useful that if you are able to do so, please make a donation to the Bread of Life soup kitchen/food pantry.
You can make a donation below by clicking on the Donate button.

I am hoping to raise five thousand dollars by the time the Patriots win their 5th Super Bowl. Please mention this website by typing in Patscap's Drive for Five in the Purpose Field.
You can have a portion of your Amazon.Com purchases donated to the Bread of Life.
